1.  How do I complete the "Tools Test"? I never got the email confirmation code.     [back to FAQ List]

The confirmation code was sent to the email address that you provided when you set up your account. If you requested the confirmation code and did not receive it, then there is a problem with your email account. You will likely have similar problems when taking any online classes, so it's something you need to investigate. Meanwhile, if you've come this far, we'll help you proceed with the process of completing the tools test: the confirmation code that you need to enter is: EMAILWORKS

2. How can I change my e-mail address?     [back to FAQ List]

Students may change their e-mail address from our web interface by clicking on the "My Account" tab, and then selecting "Account Information" from the left menu.  Replace the existing e-mail address with your new address. Click the "submit" button at the bottom of the page. The account information screen will be refreshed; the revised e-mail address should be displayed. If the revised e-mail address is correct, click on the submit button again, and the information will be permanently updated on the MCCVLC server. Note that your password will not change.

3. I'm setting up my account the first time - how do I select a "home" college?     [back to FAQ List]

Generally, your Home college should be the Michigan community college closest to you geographically, since that college will be most convenient for any services that may require a visit.  You should complete the formal admissions process at your home college so that you can receive the services appropriate for you to achieve your educational goals.

4.How do I drop a course that I've enrolled in through the VLC?   [back to FAQ List]

In order to drop a course or withdraw from a course, you must directly contact the Provider College. To find a listing of the contacts for Registration, click on the 'help center' tab above, then click on 'records/registration'. You must call or send a message requesting to be dropped or withdrawn from the course. Please include your name, student number, course information (course name and course number), term and the fact that you requested to enroll in the course through the MCCVLC in your message.

5. I didn't download the FERPA waiver document.  Where can I find it now?.    [back to FAQ List]

You can find the FERPA waiver at:  http://www.mccvlc.org/~staff/ferpa.html
Please print it, sign and date it as indicated, and mail it to the VLC office:
attn: Student Records
Michigan Community College Association
222 North Chestnut Street
Lansing, Michigan   48933-1000

or fax it to MCCA at: (517) 372-0905

6. Do I need to submit a FERPA waiver each semester?     [back to FAQ List]

No. You only need one FERPA waiver on file - ever. If you have a waiver on file, you may enroll in classes for the current semester and for all future semesters.

7. If my waiver is not on file, will it hold up my enrollment?      [back to FAQ List]

No, it will not hold up your enrollment - your provider college(s) will process your enrollment requests. If you do not submit a FERPA waiver, however, your provider college(s) will not be able to share your grades with your home college or update your transcript at the end of the semester.

8. Do I send the FERPA waiver to the VLC or to my home college?    [back to FAQ List]

Please print the FERPA waiver, sign and date it as indicated, and mail it to the MCCVLC offices:
attn: Student Records
Michigan Community College Association
222 North Chestnut Street
Lansing, Michigan   48933-1000

or fax it to the VLC at: (517) 372-0905

9. Can't I just e-mail the FERPA waiver?    [back to FAQ List]

No, federal regulations require that we have a document with your signature indicating that we may share information about you among the colleges that have a legitimate need to know. Thus, you must print the document, sign it, and return it to us. If you would like to do that electronically, then you must scan the signed document, save it as a modest sized .jpg or .pdf file, and attach it to an email to: assist@mccvlc.org - make the subject line: scanned FERPA waiver.

10. It's been more than 72 hours, and I haven't heard anything regarding the course I enrolled in. What should I do?     [back to FAQ List]

If you enrolled with your correct e-mail address and still have not heard from the provider college(s), you should contact the person who handles online enrollments at the college. Click on the 'help center' tab above, and then follow the link to 'records/registration'. Find your provider college(s), and there will be contact information for the person you need to reach. Use e-mail first, and then follow up with a phone call if necessary.

11. How do I pay my tuition bill for a VLC course?     [back to FAQ List]

It is your responsibility to pay the Provider college for course tuition and fees after your enrollment has been completed. Do not pay the MCCVLC.

Even if you have financial aid, you are responsible for paying the provider college for courses taken through the VLC.   Please note that the terms and conditions for paying tuition and fees at the provider colleges may be very different from those at your home college, and you are responsible for complying with the terms and conditions of each provider college.   If you need more information, you are encouraged to communicate with the contact person for the provider college.  From the 'help center' tab, click on the 'accounting' link to find the contact person at the Provider College.

12. How do I find out about textbooks and other materials for my course?     [back to FAQ List]

The course summary page includes information regarding textbooks and other materials required for each course. The Provider college will send orientation and textbook purchasing information before your course begins.

13. When should I expect to hear from my Instructor?     [back to FAQ List]

While some instructors may contact students as soon as they register for a course, you probably won't hear from your instructor until the course starts.  The start date for each course is included in the course information  (click on the 'courses' tab above, and follow the 'Catalog (Schedule)' link, selecting the appropriate semester).  Expect to hear from your instructor the first week of the class with the url for the course, your login information and an introductory message.  It is very important that the e-mail address that you use when registering still be active when the course begins, as it will be the primary way your instructor will have to contact you.

14. I saw a course in the catalog, why is it not available when I go to enroll in it?     [back to FAQ List]

Please carefully review the course schedule information. The provider college has included the beginning and ending dates for registration in the course. Each course will only be available for enrollment between the beginning registration date and ending registration date.  If you attempt to enroll in a course outside that open enrollment time period, the course will not show as available.

15. How can I find out what courses will be available in future semesters?     [back to FAQ List]

Most provider colleges won't make the final decision about what courses will be offered until shortly before the early registration period for each semester, however you can get a good idea from the offerings of the current semester.  Click on the 'courses' tab above and select the current semester.  Even though most courses will show as not being available, you'll see the kinds of courses that are typically offered.  If you see a specific course of interest, you might want to e-mail the student contact at the Provider college to request information about that course (click on the 'contact us' tab, then select the left menu option: 'participating college directory').

16. What are the distinctions between provider, home, and degree-granting colleges?     [back to FAQ List]

The provider college is the college which is offering the course that you're interested in taking.  It's possible that you may have two, or even more, provider colleges if you're taking online courses from multiple colleges in the same semester.  Your home college will likely be the most convenient community college for you to physically visit for support services - for example, meeting with an advisor or tutor, accessing the library, or having a test proctored. Your degree-granting college is the college from which you are planning to obtain a certificate or degree - either a traditional program of study or an online program.  While in many cases, your home college and your degree-granting college are the same, with online programs of study, they are not always the same.  You may decide to seek an online degree from a college other than your home college.  Please note that in most cases, financial aid will be available from your degree-granting college, since most financial aid is associated with your program of study.  Your degree-grating college will also be the college that will maintain your permanent transcript for you.

17. Is financial aid available for courses listed in the catalog?     [back to FAQ List]

Yes, but please read this answer completely and carefully.  The member colleges have approved a "Financial Aid Consortium Agreement" that makes it possible for you to receive financial aid from your degree-granting college for courses taken through the collaborative from one or more provider colleges.  You MUST contact the Financial Aid office at your degree-granting college to find out the details, but generally, it works like this:  You will enroll in courses from one or more provider colleges, and you will be charged by each college for the courses you are taking.  Paying for these courses is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY; also you should understand that the terms and conditions for payment may be different at each provider college.  The terms and conditions of any financial aid will be determined by your DEGREE-GRANTING COLLEGE.   Your financial aid award will be contingent upon making satisfactory progress in all your courses; if you meet all the requirements of the degree-granting college financial aid policies, you will receive your award according to the timelines of the degree-granting college.  Please note that the degree-granting college will provide the award directly to you and will NOT forward your award to any provider college on your behalf.   Contact the Financial Aid office at your degree-granting college for more help.

18. Will my credits transfer?     [back to FAQ List]

Your Degree-granting college will review official grades from the Provider college where you have taken your course in order to determine if these credits can be applied to your choice of degree. Catalog information for each course includes a list of equivalencies. Contact your Degree-granting college advisor, counselor or records office if you have further questions regarding a specific course.

19. What if I have computer (technical) problems?     [back to FAQ List]

In some cases, you may be able to get the necessary technical assistance from your home college.  If your computer problems are beyond the scope of the technical support your home college can provide, they will recommend one or more local resources for you to contact.

20. What if I have computer connection problems?     [back to FAQ List]

If you are at home or at work, you will connect to the VLC via an Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Since the services of each ISP are somewhat unique, there are no universal answers to questions dealing with connections between your computer and the Internet.  You will need to work directly with your ISP if you are having problems with your Internet connection.

21. Where can I get help (tutoring) with VLC classes?     [back to FAQ List]

Assistance with some classwork may be available from your home college - generally check with the tutoring center. Online tutoring is available in other cases; click on the 'help center' tab above and then select 'tutoring'.

22. Do I need any testing before enrolling in these courses?     [back to FAQ List]

Your Provider college may contact you to verify skill levels and/or that you have met the prerequisites for the course.

23. What if I'm not a resident of Michigan?      [back to FAQ List]

If you are not a resident of Michigan, we welcome you to the Virtual Learning Collaborative!  More information for non-Michigan students can be found by clicking on the 'welcome' tab above, then following the information for out of state students link.
